  • Why The Name?
Watermelanin doesn't have a slush pile.
If you're new to the lit game, a slush pile is a stack of unsolicited pieces editors ignore until it's time to clear their desks and their inboxes.
We want you to pitch us.
We want you to send us your work.
We want to see those pieces you don't think will find a home because we want to help you perfect them so they have a home here. We want to help you grow and hone your craft.
We want you to have links to your work that you can send to your dream publications.
So we read everything.
EVERYTHING.

This does mean it might take a while for us to get back to you, but we will get back to you. Even if it's just to say "this one is a pass for us" because not everything fits and that's okay.

OPEN CALLS FOR SUBMISSIONS

Online Journal     Rolling Submissions Year Round
Culture, Fiction, Poetry, Nonfiction, Digital Art, and Photography

Digital Magazine Accepting Submissions January 1- April 30
Literary Fiction, Literary Nonfiction, Digital Art, and Photography
                                       2019 Theme: UNFUNNY. Submissions Closed.

The Nitty Gritty

Watermelanin is a place to showcase work by People of Color. We accept submissions of art, writing, and multimedia.
Not everything you submit has to be about the experience of being PoC (though we never tire of those stories), but it should be by a Person of Color (or you need a convincing reason why a non-PoC is the only person who can tell the story).

We accept simultaneous submissions because who has the time to submit one piece at a time, honestly? Just let us know if your work has been accepted elsewhere.

Give us two months to respond to you about submissions to the online journal and five months for the digital magazine. Then feel free to follow up; honestly, it doesn't bother us at all.

Unfortunately, Watermelanin cannot pay you for your submissions at this time. Maybe with some generous donors and a grant or two, we can in the future.
You retain all rights to work published on watermelaninmag.com and in Watermelanin Magazine, but if your work is subsequently published elsewhere, give us a courtesy shout out a la "This piece first appeared on WatermelaninMag.com or Watermelanin Magazine Issue 1".

We Do Not Accept:
  • Full length manuscripts. We're not a publishing house, so please keep submissions of fiction below 5,000 words. Culture/Nonfiction should be no more than 3,000 words unless necessary (we'll leave that up to you).
  • Screenplays
  • Pieces that marginalize communities. We shouldn't have to say it but no racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, etc.
  • Pieces sent in the body of the email. They usually end up in the spam folder, so we probably won't see it.
